Hey Moshers!
I (it’s me, Sally!) was lucky enough to meet Lexi in person this week, after talking for a little while as I’d seen a couple of her posts in the Download Community group
Lexi shared a photo of herself at Download 2025 after having a double mastectomy with no reconstruction. I was only just starting my journey with breast cancer when I saw her post and reached out to her to thank her for sharing her story and showing such courage and strength in the face of such a cruel disease. Lexi has given me permission to share her story.
In January 2024 a scan showed that Lexi had multiple cysts in her chest but she was told they were NOT cancerous. Even with a family history of breast cancer (as well as other BRCA cancers) Lexi had to fight for a genetic test, she was, eventually, then tested for genetic cancer and in March found out she was BRCA 2 positive. 2 days after Download 2024 Lexi opted for a double mastectomy with no reconstruction. At this point her double mastectomy was seen as preventative however when she received her histology results things became a lot more real. The cysts had cancerous cells. Without realising it, Lexi had saved her own life by taking precautionary measures to protect herself. Lexi was only 31 with two young children to think of.
Lexi’s recovery wasn’t straightforward, multiple setbacks and additional battles plagued her recovery but she stood her ground and kept fighting. When chatting, Lexi told me about the moments before she went down for surgery to fix an internal bleed. She said the last thing she remembers was asking the doctors to tell her kids she loved them.
Since 2024, Lexi has been open about her story and bravely shown her new body with grace and courage. She had a chest tattoo done over her scars and found a way to turn something negative into something that made her feel herself again.
Lexi is still fighting battles both physical and mental after a double mastectomy, hysterectomy and now will have surgery again in the coming month but regardless she is still smiling and we could all take a page out of her book.
